How do solar panels work?

This panels are equipped with silicon cells called photovoltaic cells. A cell has a + side and a - side. When the UV sun rays hit the front of the cell (+), the electrons are excited and are attracted to the back side (-). A continus electric current is formed. As all cells are all connected to each other, the current is therefore added to reach higher voltages. At the back side of the panel, you have a junction box. This box connects all the cells together. You get a + and - solar cable. You must connect them to the solar inverter or micro-inverter. These devices transform direct current into alternating current. You can thus operate your solar installation in the long term.

So you want to install a solar installation? Why not? It's an excellent idea and it's very easy to install! This allows you to become an energy producer in the long term. What are the new technologies?

As we know, the field of solar energy has experienced considerable growth. This year will be even more flourishing. Already, very soon, new technologies will emerge in order to increase their efficiency and reduce costs. Through this category of product, type of cell, we present the technologies to come.

SUNPOWER Maxim Technology

SUNPOWER solar panels Let us tell you about Maxim. Ready? Maxim is a California-based company that develops innovative analog circuits for the automotive, industrial, healthcare, mobile consumer, and cloud data center markets. Looking to expand its business, it designs and manufactures them with Maxim’s new cell string optimization technology that allows photovoltaic (PV) panels to harvest much more energy. Namely, they gain 30% more power with the Maxim cell string optimizer. That’s a revolutionary innovation, right?

Bifacial from I'M SOLAR

I'M SOLAR solar panels As their name suggests, these panels have two solar exposure faces. They can capture sunlight from the front and back, which is why they are considered an interesting new solar solution. Compared to traditional panels, the I’M SOLAR bifacial photovoltaic module is distinguished by a transparent bottom that allows them to be installed on a veranda, carport or any type that allows light to pass through. I’M SOLAR uses a photovoltaic cell technology called TOPCON which offers the best yields (or power per square meter). In addition, thanks to its reduced weight, the bifacial panel can be installed on a flat or inclined roof.

Solar windows

Soon, your home will be able to generate solar energy from places other than your roof. How? Is it possible? Ah, yes, researchers are developing solar windows through transparent films that act as energy producers. So you can install these windows on your building to generate electricity by absorbing ultraviolet rays. It’s a revolutionary technology that allows building owners to gain partial independence from the electrical grid.

SOLRIF solar roof tiles

SOLRIF solar panels With a new glimmer of hope, solar tiles on therefore, as its name suggests, products that make your roof waterproof. The solar roof is a building integrated photovoltaic product (called BIPV) that exploits solar and integrates it into the roof. But what are the advantages of solar tiles? Aesthetically, solar tiles look like ordinary roof tiles, which could significantly increase the value of your home. In addition, one of the reasons why you can invest in this technology is that this product is ideal when building your house because you do not have to buy normal tiles.

What are the different sizes and technology?

If you are considering installing this system in your home, there is one important factor to consider: the size! So, take a look at the different sizes available on the market:

120-cell panels: 120-cell photovoltaic panels are often used in residential and commercial systems. Most 120 cell panels are about 66x40" and offer power ranging from 440 to 600 watts. Additionally, all 120 cell modules weigh 25kgs.

180 cell panels: These are specifically designed for larger systems. However, they can also be used for projects. Also, a 180 cell panel is usually larger and produces more electricity than a 120 cell panel.

Small panels: Are power sources for small devices that do not have robust power requirements such as cameras, flashlights and watches, and laptops. The advantage of small dimensions is that they are easier to handle and manage.

What are the different types of photovoltaic cells?

On the market, there are two solar technologies that are commonly used in residential installations:

Monocrystalline Panels: What do you need to know about Monocrystalline photovoltaic panels? First of all, and most importantly, you should know that monocrystalline panels are made up of monocrystalline cells which are the most efficient photovoltaic cells (efficiency of 22 to 29%). This is why monocrystalline silicon panels are, today, the most common and most efficient types. However, these panels are expensive. If you are thinking of installing a photovoltaic system to benefit from solar energy and save money, order through Alma Solar® and benefit from a better quality-price ratio!

Polycrystalline Panels: Did you know that polycrystalline photovoltaic panels are used in residential and commercial installations? Moreover, they are the most popular choice worldwide because they offer a better balance between price and quality. On the other hand, polycrystalline panels are less efficient and require more space on the roof. So what are you waiting for? Switch to solar energy to save money! Photovoltaic installation is a good investment!

SunPower panel

SUNPOWER solar panels SUNPOWER is an energy company located in America. It designs and manufactures crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells based on a technology called back contact. The photovoltaic cells connect to each other by filaments on their back. It has 30 years of experience in the field of renewable solar energy. SunPower® is known for its range of direct current photovoltaic modules in the PERFORMANCE series, as well as the MAXEON MAX3 and MAX4 range. Thanks to their high-performance cells, SunPower is the most efficient currently available on the market. While the majority of its competitors offer an efficiency between 20% and 25%, SunPower products are between 25% and 30%. On the other hand, SunPower solar modules are the most expensive on the market!

TRINA panel:

TRINA solar panels It is a Chinese manufacturer of photovoltaic panels. The TRINA company has launched a new range with a power of up to 600Wp! This is the VERTEX series! Using TRINA monocrystalline panels in your projects requires less mounting material. With a weight of 22 kg, the panels also reduce the load on the roof structure in most cases. TRINA SOLAR photovoltaic modules are available in different models. TRINA has developed innovative design qualities to prevent the deposit of dirt and snow and ensure the most optimal electricity production throughout the year.

Which criterion to choose?

Crystalline panels have the highest efficiency of all panels. Monocrystalline panels have an efficiency of between 22% and 30%, making them the most efficient of all crystalline panels. Polycrystalline panels have an efficiency of 17% to 22% and can be the most cost-effective option. Thin film panels are best for unorthodox roof styles and are the most durable. Other criteria you may want to consider include:

Their power output tolerance: Like most products, they can have different specifications indicating their technical attributes. This can be quite a confusing area, but there are some specifications that you should particularly consider when making your choice: The power tolerance (i.e. are you getting 300W or 300W +/- 10%?) Some are much better than others.

The aesthetics: black panel or transparent panel. Some people choose the look of certain types of panels over others – it just comes down to personal preference. Generally, thin film panels look more uniform and some people find them to be better looking. However, they take up a lot more space due to their lower conversion efficiency – and aren’t widely installed in Australia these days anyway. Some suppliers can integrate the panels into your roof, others can provide solar tiles. And if you have a weird curved roof, you can even get flexible panels! Generally, going for a more ‘utilitarian’ look will be cheaper, as super clever integrated systems can cost a lot more.

What parameter influences solar electricity production?

Several factors can have an impact on future solar production and therefore on energy independence. Beyond the photovoltaic technological solutions presented above, there are several factors:

Region influences production: The price also varies from one region to another. Some utility companies offer incentives to owners who install them. You should check the website of the respective government of your country.

How they are manufactured: Standard panels with a Tedlar film on the back have a lower production. Over the years, this Tedlar plastic film will create a static charge between the glass and the frame. This phenomenon is called PID. This charge impacts your electricity production. You can lose up to 50% of kWh. Choosing a bi-glass panel eliminates this effect and ensures constant energy production over time.

Temperature: They produce more energy when it is cold. This means that if they are at a temperature of 25°C, they will produce their maximum electricity. The problem is that to have this temperature, you must be in winter. Unfortunately, in this period, the sun is not present. This is why the areas where there is wind and sun are the geographical areas that allow the best production of electricity. This gives you greater energy independence for your home.

What can be powered with a solar panel?

With a modern solar energy system, including solar battery storage and photovoltaic panel, you can certainly run an entire home entirely on solar power. Solar systems and installation costs have continued to decline over the past two decades since the widespread introduction of residential and commercial solar use. This is even as rebates and tax credits from local governments and incentives from utility companies continue to decline year over year. The significant decline in solar costs is due in part to the wider national and global adoption of solar energy and in part to rapid advances in solar energy system technologies. To determine the cost-effectiveness and other feasibility factors of running an entire solar-powered home, start with these initial baseline assessments:

- Calculate how much electricity you use per month.
- Evaluate the solar generation capacity of your climate region
- Evaluate your solar generation environment based on your home’s environment.

Connect

You will connect them to your solar inverter. Solar inverter will manage the power and convert into AC current (alternative current).

Manage

You will have to install the Alma Solar application to your smartphone. It will allow you to see the production every minute and to manage the energy in your home.

Store your solar energy

Its will produce electricity every day, like a parabol. That mean during night, you will not produce any energy. To answer your needs, you will have to store with Solar batteries.
