Green economy creates jobs, according to the International Labour Organization. The ILO even estimates that between 15 and 60 million jobs could be created in this sector by 2030. These figures were released after COP21.
Climate problems as a source of employment
According to analysis by the International Labour Organization, environmental issues could also yield positive outcomes. The ILO predicts that by 2030, up to 60 million jobs could be created, with at least 15 million globally. Cyril Cosme, Director of the ILO's Paris office, even states that this environmental economy will be a means to combat poverty and social inequality. This ILO report encourages countries to move away from the current environmentally harmful development model to promote job creation. Overfishing of the seas, deforestation, and erosion are driving up commodity prices and causing economic and social damage.
Millions of jobs through renewable energy
To date, renewable energy sources have created over 5 million jobs worldwide. There is a significant growth rate of 21% per year in this sector. Besides this specific sector, tens of millions of "green" jobs have been created so far, and this number continues to rise. Currently, about 14.6 million employees on the European continent are involved in the restoration of forests and other natural resources. Developing countries have the greatest potential for creating green jobs through collaboration with the United Nations, private companies, and funders.
Sustainable development only possible through the participation of all socio-economic actors
Ensuring the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is crucial for the future of humanity as a whole. According to this ILO report, this requires the participation of all social and economic actors. Several countries such as Namibia, Ghana, and Morocco have already implemented specific policies to support the green economy. A concrete example is Zambia, where collaboration between the government and a private company has created 4000 new jobs in the ecological construction sector.
